Year 1 Science Topic 'Seasonal Change'

Animated Magnifying Glass

Year 1 became Nature Detectives as they began a year long science topic focusing on 'Seasonal Change'. Over the course of a year they will learn about and observe changes across the seasons in the school environment and in themselves. Discovering and exploring changes in the weather, temperature, rainfall, wind speed, animal types and their habitats, plant types, flower types, comparing deciduous and non-deciduous trees and learning Latin names. The children will record their discoveries in their special Seasonal Booklet.

Observing the changes to the Acer Campestra (Field Maple tree)

What a discovery the Acer Campestra was covered with ladybird larvae some had changed into pupa, almost ready to hatch out as adult ladybirds! (please scroll to see more)

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

With every season change we have drawn the Acer Campestra...

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

...our observational drawings really show how the tree has changed

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

It is also interesting to see how we ourselves have changed, what we wear, how we have grown etc.

What amazing discoveries we made during our search for wildlife, here are some of the things we saw

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

Swifts, a swallow and a house martin just migrated from Africa!

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

Over by the prunus tree lots of holes have appeared in the ground?

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

I wonder what animal could have made those?

Did you know, if you wipe the white foam onto your hand...

...you will find a tiny insect living in there...

The ladybird larvae eats as much as it can then hides inside a cacoon a little like butterflies.

Photograph of Year 1 Seasonal Change Science Project

Our Acer Campestra was covered in larvae and pupa, perhaps will will soon see adult ladybirds hatching?

After a successful hatching of Painted Ladies we have put two of the ladybird larvae into bug pots to see if we can watch them change into pupae and hatch as adult ladybirds.

Here are some close up images of the buds from the Prunus tree. It's hard to believe that wraped up in these tiny buds are leaves and beautiful pink blosson. As spring progresses these buds will open, the photograph below shows how it will look (just in case it has finished flowering before out next science day)

...do you think they will continue to grow without light? We will have to keep a close eye on them to see what happens.
