Mad Science School Assembly

It was wonderful to welcome Mad Science to Goldfield and to share an exciting School Assembly followed by a day filled with amazing Science Workshops all part of our Science Week.

Our first experiment can be done anywhere at anytime. Let's feel the air around us!

Photograph of Mad Science School Assembly

Flap your hands by your ears and not only will you feel the air moving but you will hear it too. It will also cool you down!

Air is hard to see but if we blow up this giant air bag we will be able to see how much air is inside.

Now let's make a science guess or in science language a hypothesis. Who will be able to blow the most air into the giant air bag will it be this young man or young lady?

Photograph of Mad Science School Assembly

Our hypothesis is that it will be the young man as he is bigger, has bigger lungs which should enable him to blow out far stronger and longer breaths. Let's put our hypothesis to the test.

After practicing our breathing we take turns to blow five breaths of air into the bag and see how much it inflates.

Wow, that's amazing. Well done!

Now it's the young mans turn.

Now that is very interesting...

...almost the same amount of air is in the bag!

Photograph of Mad Science School Assembly

Does anyone know why the air bag has similar amounts of air inside?

Photograph of Mad Science School Assembly

Yes, you are correct. If you stand a little further away from the opening of the air bag and hold it open as far as you can....more air can get inside!

And just to prove it ...

..... we let our gentleman volunteer have another go!

In our next experiment I will try to blow the balloons out of the volunteers hand using this tool.

Let's try to blow these paper cups down.

That was very successful.

Shall we try to blow a paper cup off your head? Please click on the play button below to see the result of this experiment.

Just enough time for one more experiment, but please do not try this at home!

Now if I can pull this cloth fast enough...

...the china cup and plate will remain in the exact position they are in!

Please click on the play button below to see if the china got broken?

Animated Thank You Mad Science that was a fantastic assembly!
