Business visit to The Akeman

The Akeman is part of Oakman Inns & Restaurants which was founded in 2005. Their vision was to create an environment where like-minded people could come and enjoy some great food and drinks whilst catching up with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues.

The most impartant part of business for the Akeman is the customer and making sure they are happy. Their team of 40 staff are dedicated to working together to look after their customers. Staff include a General Manager, Chefs, Barstaff, Waiters/Waitresses as well as office staff. The Akeman is open all day and serves food and drink from 8.00 am to midnight seven days a week!

For their business to be successful the Akeman relies on an assortment of equipment which includes compters, phones, tills, special ovens, cooking equipment, kitchen equipment, cleaning equipment and much more.

The Akeman has recently extended their business by buying the shop next door and converting it into an additional bar and table area.

Behind the bar in the main part of the restaurant we see the beer pumps, special coffee maker, tills and fridges

These are beer pumps, the beer is fizzy (carbonated) all you do is pull the handle to pour a glass of beer. The liquid travels from the cellar through pipes under the floor all the way to the pumps.

These pumps serve real ale. The ale is not fizzy, you have to keep pulling the handle to pump the ale up from the cellar into the glass.

There is also an extensive collection of drinks and fine wines for customers to enjoy with a meal.

To make a delicious cup of coffee staff grind fresh coffee beans and press them down using a giant spoon which is then attached to the coffee machine.

Hot water is forced through the ground coffee into the cup or glass. Steam jets quickly heat the milk and turn it slightly frothy.

Carefully pour the frothy hot milk into the cup and you can make a leaf pattern (which is the Akeman's logo) very clever!

Mediterranean-inspired food is served all day. Dishes include steaks and fish cooked in the charcoal-fuelled Josper grill, as well as pizzas, pasta dishes and many more home comforts.

The Josper grill cooks food by coal.

The temperature is over 200 degrees. It is so hot that the coals turn white.

Another new addition to the Akeman is the Pizza Oven! The Akeman now cooks freshly hand made pizzas for their customers eating in the restaurant as well as pizza to take away!

Next it's down to the cellar to learn about the special storage conditions for the drinks

Large wall fans keep the cellar at a cool temperature.

Our ice machine ensures we always have a fresh supply of ice to serve with cold drinks

When the drink levers in the bar are pulled gas cylinders help the fluid to travel upstairs through the pipes (a little like sucking up a very large straw).

When the beer barrels are delivered they travel down to the cellar by a lift!

Can you see the metal doors on the ground? This is where the beer barrels and cold drinks are delivered. These doors open to allow access to the lift for the cellar.
