Meet the Optometrist (optometrists are health care specialists trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality and problems with general health.)

During an eye test the optometrist uses lots of tools, lenses, special glasses, torches etc.

Most of an eye test is done with an optometrist but some of the test is done using machines!

Photograph of My Money March

This machine can take a photograph of the back of your eye. It is one of the ways to check the health of our eyes. We took turn to take a photograph of each of our eyes.

It is important that the customer is sitting in the correct postition with their chin and head resting in the frame. The table height can be adjusted by pressing buttons behine the machine.

Once everything is in the correct possition a photograph can be taken with the press of a button. The image is projected onto a screen.

From this photograph the optometrist can check that your eyes are healthy, how well you can see in the dark and lots more! (Does the image remind you of a planet?)

Next we see how i-pads are used to ensure the customers glasses fit exactly to their head and eyes.

By fitting this onto the frame of the glasses they become interactive with the i-pad.

Once all of the measurements have been taken the order/prescription is passed to the laboratory where the glasses are made up.

As well as eye tests Specsavers also offer their customers hearing test with Audiologists.

The room has specialist ventilation to remove dust and odour sometimes given off when the lenses are cut.

The lenses are placed into this machine which cuts and grinds them to fit the shape of the glasses frame.

A test to measure the strength (prescription) of glasses is repeated.

Children's glasses are made with a SPF (sun protection factor) tint on the lense. This machine measure the amount of SPF there is on the lense.

Photograph of My Money March

If the SPF level is not strong enough another tint layer is added to the lense.

Rimless glasses are the most expensive glasses to make because all of the fittings have to be added by drilling holes into the lenses.
