In the restaurant we can seat 75 customers.

We serve food and drink from 8.00 am to 11.00 pm.

We have a special oven that cooks food by coal. The Akeman is the only restaurant in Tring to have this type of oven.

Photograph of My Money Week

The oven temperature is over 200 degrees. It is so hot that the coals turn white.

In the kitchen we meet the Kitchen Porter

There are lots of fridges and freezers to store food. They must be kept at the correct temperature and are checked regularly during the day.

This is our walk in fridge.

The fridges are kept at a temperature between zero and five degrees.

Photograph of My Money March

We have different fridges for different food, one for uncooked meats, one for fish, one for cooked foods.

Photograph of My Money March

We also have some freezers. The temperature inside is displayed clearly so that we can monitor them during the day.

Some foods need to be served at a special temperature. We use this fast chiller to quickly reduce the temperature of hot food.

This is the restaurant's dishwasher, there is another one behind the bar for glasses.

This pressure tap is used for washing up by hand.

Behind the bar we see the beer pumps, special coffee maker, tills and fridges.

To make a delicious cup of coffee we grind fresh coffee beans and press them down using a giant spoon which is then attached to the coffee machine.

Hot water is forced through the ground coffee into the cup or glass

Steam jets quickly heat the milk and turn it slightly frothy.

Carefully pour the frothy hot milk into the cup and you can make a leaf pattern (which is the Akeman's logo) very clever!

Meet the bar staff, they take customer orders for drinks then prepare and serve them.

Press a button to select the drink you want to serve and it travels from the cellar to the bar through pipes! With just one press of the button you can change the drink from cola to lemonade without any cola escaping into the new glass - very clever!

These are beer pumps, the beer is fizzy (carbonated) all you do is pull the handle to pour a glass of beer. The liquid travels from the cellar through pipes under the floor all the way to the pumps.

These pumps serve real ale. The ale is not fizzy, you have to keep pulling the handle to pump the ale up from the cellar into the glass.

We have an extensive collection of drinks and fine wines for our customers to enjoy with a meal.

The Akeman's tills are all electronic. Every member of staff have their own code which they enter on the touch screen.

Then the staff select the customers order by pressing the screen, the till calculates the total cost of the customers order and the staff can accept payment by cash or using a credit card reader.

Unfortunately there was a fault in the cellar which prevented us from visiting that area. The photographs that follow were taken from the cellar on a previous visit.

Next it's down to the cellar to learn about the special storage conditions for the drinks

Large wall fans keep the cellar at a cool temperature.

Our ice machine ensures we always have a fresh supply of ice to serve with cold drinks

When the drink levers in the bar are pulled gas cylinders help the fluid to travel upstairs through the pipes (a little like sucking up a very large straw).

When the beer barrels are delivered they travel down to the cellar by a lift!

Can you see the metal doors on the ground? This is where the beer barrels and cold drinks are delivered. These doors open to allow access to the lift for the cellar.

Upstairs there are lots of storage areas, one for the restaurant, one for cleaning products and one for the staff uniforms.

All businesses try to have a USP? (Unique Selling Point!) ... and for The Akeman it is that they have something for everyone be it food or drink, they are also very family friendly!
