Sharing the Jewish Faith

Photograph of Talk about Jewish Faith

Linda visited Years 1 & 2 and talked about her Jewish faith.

Judaism is practised all around the world and has many similarities to the Christian faith. They believe in one God, and family life is very special to them as they follow their religion.

Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday evenings and continues until sunset on Saturday when families celebrate together by sharing a special meal.

In these photographs Linda is holding a Prayer Shawl (Tallit) and Prayer Hat (Kippah). These are normally worn when people go to worship in the Synagogue. Linda very kindly let us try them on.

This is Linda's 'Mezuzah' (decorative case) which is normally attached to the doorframe of her family's home. Inside the Mezuzah is a special prayer 'Shema Yisrael' which is written on parchment. The beginning of the prayer is "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One". When Linda passes the Mezuzah she thinks about God and all the goodness he has brought.

Every Torah is handwritten and is read from right to left. At the end of a reading the scroll is unwound ready to read the next part.

Year 1 Make Rakhi Bracelets

A centries old Hindu Festival 'Raksha Bandhan' honours the sacred tie between brothers and sisters. During the festival it is traditional for 'Rakhi Bracelets' to be tied around the wrists of brothers and sisters as a sign of affection, love and protection from whatever harms and troubles life throws their way!
