Dacorum Heritage Trust visit Year 1 to introduce the children to Victorian Life
We made a time line to help us understand how long ago the Victorian era was. Different events were pegged up. We discovered why it was called the Victorian era (because of Queen Victoria). During this period lots of new things were introduced.
- 1st Christmas Tree
- 1st Chocolate Easter Egg
- 1st Electric Light Bulbs
- 1st Postage Stamps Used
- 1st Car invented
After this introduction the children took turns to visit three activites.
Activity 1 - Victorian Thaumatropes
During Victorian times, toys that made pictures move fascinated people. One of the earliest and simplest of these was the thaumatrope. We all made our own thaumatrope with a bird on one side and a cage on the other. Once the disc is twisted enough and you pull the strings the disc spins and the bird appears inside the cage (very clever).
Activity 2 - Handling and Comparing Objects
We compared Victorian objects with new versions.
Activity 3 - Toys Old and New
We looked at variety of toys and sorted them into old and new. We were able to take a close look at replica old toys. In the Victorian times only rich children had toys, only rich children went to school. The poor children had to go to work in factories, farms and large households.
